Nikolai Wroth, once a ruthless human warlord in the 1700s and now a general in the rebel vampire army, needs to find his Bride, the one woman who can render him truly alive. As a turned human, he doesn’t enjoy a heartbeat or breaths and is consequently weaker than fully blooded vampires. He wants his Bride for the power she will bring him and can hardly believe it when his heart beats for Myst the Coveted, a mad, fey, mythological creature.

Myst is known throughout the world as the most beautiful Valkyrie, part chillingly fierce warrior, part beguiling seductress who can “make you want her even as she’s killing you.” She has devoted her life to protecting an ancient, powerful jewel and to fighting the vampires, and she now sees a way to torment one—for with Wroth’s heartbeat comes consuming sexual desire that can only be slaked by her.

She eludes him for five years, but he has finally chased her to ground and stolen the jewel which commands her, giving him absolute power over her. While he possesses it, he can make her do anything, and he plans to in order for her to experience first hand the agonizing, unending lust she’d purposely subjected him to for half a decade. Yet when Wroth realizes he wants more from her and frees her, will she come back to him?

This book should be seen as a prelude for the Immortals After Dark series. Yes, it’s short and lacking at some points, but it provides a decent introduction to a new, fascinating universe. I must say that I love what I saw so far. Right now I’m almost 50% done with the second book in the series, so I can say that this has very good potential. We are looking at one of the best paranormal romance series out there.

So, let’s start! We have a hot hero, Nikolai, who’s one of the best badasses I’ve encountered so far. Seriously, this guy will kidnap and slap the hell out of you just to get in your pants. Well… minus the slapping part. Unless it’s spanking. Lots of perverts out there, so beware! Yeah, so I loved him, he’s a sweetheart (fanged one – gotta love ‘em!). But what made me laugh was the fact that some people (girls mainly) started complaining about this book, calling it sexist and offending. Yeah, I get what they mean. The guy just got all psycho on the poor woman, manhandled her one too many times, and kind of forced himself on her the rest of the time. So what? Big deal! He’s a hottie, he would die for her so he’s forgiven. Well, I say people have different opinions so you can’t criticize a girl for being a bit sadistic. I see Myst a bit over the Sadistic-Bitch-O-Meter, but she’s allright. She’s an Xbox addict, so I have to love her.

Conclusion? I liked the book, it was cool and hot at the same time (heh) aaaand really can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Feminists beware!
